A better bird suet

So, you may remember a previous post where I made some bird suet from beef fat. I remember doing it, because it STUNK up my house! The birds liked it, and I liked the birds, but the process was for the birds!
So, now I have a new suet recipe. I found this one in a magazine called Birds and Blooms. You will like this one more, as I do, because it does not stink up your house! I divided the recipe in half, because the suet has to be stored in the fridge, and I don't want to take up too much room in there. Also, it is so easy to make, that I don't mind doing it more often.
Start with lard. (Right? So much better that chunks of beef fat!) 1/2 cup of lard.

Add 1/2 cup of peanut butter. These you melt in a sauce pan.

While this is melting, you put a few things together in a big bowl:
1 cup of oats
1 cup of birdseed mix
1/2 cup of flour
1/2 cup of cornmeal

Mix these all up.
After the peanut butter and lard are melted, go ahead and mix with the dry stuff.

After you mix it all together you put it into a mold. I have this.

It is the container that held store bought suet logs. I just washed it out after I used the suet logs. So, it is handy for making my own. I also use a foil pan, like the kind you take to potlucks. Both are just right.
Anyway, press the mixture into the molds.

Place these in the fridge overnight. It may be a good idea to label these as BIRD TREATS. I think they look sort of yummy, and you don't want a human biting into these thinking they are granola bars!

So, now you have the logs in the mold, and if you use a shallow pan as a mold, you can just cut them into bars.

Bring on the birds!
