Home Is Where The Heart Is

Today is Groundhog Day! Whether winter goes long or short, the truth is that Valentine's Day is upon us. A few weeks ago I saw some pictures online of some cute embroidered hearts, so I set out to recreate them!

I was not sure if the ones online were little coin purses or what, but I decided mine would be little hanging decorations.

Step one: Pull out the wool! I think this project could be completed using felt, but I so love using wool. I buy wool at quilt shops and quilt shows and add it to my stash. (A little tip: I recently took a photo on my phone of all my wool set out to view so that I would not buy colors I do not need!)

I keep some basic shapes handy at my workbench, one of which is a heart. I use these not only in fabric crafts, but in paper crafting.

After choosing some nice reds, I outlined the heart on the wool. But, I did NOT cut the hearts out yet.

I did not cut them because I was thinking it would be easier to do the embroidery on the full pieces of wool, rather than the tiny hearts.

For the first heart I embroidered a vine in a lime green color, and filled in the leaves with bright blue. You will notice my jeans in the background of the photos. All of this work was done on my lap!

I then put several pink French Knots along the vine.

For the second heart I chose three interesting pink buttons from my button collection, and embroidered lime green leaves on the heart. I first sewed on the buttons, and then added the embroidery.

The buttons were then sewed on using heavy red embroidery thread.

Now it is time to cut the hearts out. fronts and backs, and place, wrong sides together.

After cutting, I went almost all the way around with a blanket stitch. The vine heart I stitched in red, the button heart I stitched in pink.

I stopped stitching in time to leave a small opening. I knotted the thread, but did not cut it yet. You see the needle is still there as I am stuffing.

Next, stuff the tiny hearts.

After stuffing, I finished the outside in blanket stitch.

All that was left was to add some interesting ribbon to the top.

Now I have the sweetest little hearts to hang around my home!

See, I told you that Home Is Where The Heart Is!
