My First Diaper Cake

There was a baby shower yesterday, and my idea was to make a police theme diaper cake, as the new papa is a police detective. These diaper cake ideas are all over the internet and Pinterest. People make them all sorts of themes. The sky is the limit. So, why not a police theme diaper cake?
First, I looked up how to do it. Well, it turns out there are 2 ways. One way is to roll each diaper up, like a burrito, and put them all together to make a cake. I liked the look of this second way, though. That is to kind of layer all the diapers together.
So, first off is to get supplies. I would suggest you buy diapers a bit bigger than the ones I bought - Newborn size! I used all 100 of the diapers in this box.

The half roll of paper towels is for the center. It sort of adds stability. The rubber bands hold it all together.
Also, you need some decorations.

The colors of the shower were to be navy, pink and gold (gender neutral because we don't know the gender of the pending arrival!) So, ribbon in various sizes.

And some police toys.
Now, to begin.
I started with the base layer. Some tutorials said to start with the top, but that did not work out for me.

So, I spread a layer of diapers out, and wrapped them around the paper towels. Then, another layer, and more, until it was as big as I wanted it.

One thing about these diapers is that most are printed on one side. So, you need to be sure that the outer layers have the printing facing to the inside.

Another thing to consider, as you begin to add layers, is that the folded part of the diaper shold be out. It makes it smoother, and looks much better. So, after your layer is made, you need to go around it and make adjustments.
So, then I added layers and ended up with four.

I added a base by tracing the outside onto the broken down box, and cutting it out. Any cardboard will do. Some tutorials showed people purchasing those cake bases that they use for real cakes.

Now the real fun begins. Decorating. Start with ribbons

More ribbons

I stapled the ribbons in the back to keep them together.

Add the topper, which is made of... RIBBONS!

Police toys
I made little badges using my wet embossing stuff and a shield stamp. I made them gold, to match the shower colors.

I hung these on the cake with ribbons that say "baby boy" and "baby girl"

Here it is all done in my kitchen.

And here it is at the shower!
Certainly not the work of a pro, but I had fun with it. Now, I think I can make another one some time. Not as hard as I thought it would be!
