Switchel - A Summer Refresher

Switchel is a beverage that I make in the summer, and find so so refreshing. Another name for it is Haymaker's Punch. Switchel is easy to make, and I know you will love it as a summer beverage, even if you are not making hay.
Long ago, switchel functioned much like our sports drinks do today. It was used as re hydration and electrolyte replacement, after hard work. The origins of switchel are not entirely clear, but it was present in the early days of the Americas. During the 19th century it was a popular beverage among those working in hay fields.
If you were to look up a recipe, you may see several versions. Most include water as the base, along with vinegar, a sweetener and a flavor. Here is the one I use, and love.
Ingredients:

4 Cups water, 4 Tb maple syrup, 4 Tb apple cider vinegar, 1 tsp fresh ginger, minced. A large jar is needed too.
Mix everything in the large jar.

Shake or stir. Refrigerate at least 12 hours.
After the time has passed, strain into another jar.

If you are serving it to company, garnish with a spring of mint! Even if you are not having company, make it special for yourself!
